More feedback on my music video

As well as collecting video feedback on my music video and online feedback, I collected feedback using social media. I used Whatsapp in order to send the music video to other friends, and asked them to reply with a comment they had on the video.

Learning how to colour correct

It was very important that we learnt how to use the basics of editing software. After we had got to grips with the programmes we then learnt more advance techniques such as colour correction. The videos below are where we learnt how to use the software and how to colour correct.

Now we have learnt the basics of editing we are now able to more on to more challenging stuff.

We are planning on using colour effects in our music video when Eleanor is dancing. In order to get the best results we must first practice and find tutorials on this.

Analysis of feedback from our website

We wanted to see what our teenagers within 15-25 thought about the website we created, seeing as they fit within the target audience and type of people that would use it, meaning we wanted to insure they would be satisfied and able to navigate their way through it easily.

We asked what they liked and disliked about our website and if they felt it was easy enough to use/ we had to improve. The majority said that the website was very easy to use and had most of the information they wanted to see on it. A number said they would have wanted to have seen the music video on there, which we took into consideration and did. In addition, we tried to adapt the colours so they were more similar (which a number of them seemed to pick up on).

As a majority of our feedback, our peers said we should add the music video and CD cover in order to make our website more representative of an actual artist. Therefore, we made these changes.

Overall our feedback was very positive as our audience agreed that the website looked very professional due to the fact that it was simple and easy to navigate around the website, Additionally, our feedback showed that everyone liked the black and pink colour scheme as it matches our digipack and music video very well, making our work consistent

Feedback on our website

Feedback from our target audience on what we should change:
From going around different media classes and outside of lesson time, I gained feedback in order to improve my website and make it the most professional looking.

•They really liked the Home page Picture, so we should keep that as our main front page, though, they found the marble background and pink font too girly and tacky.
•We should change the colour scheme to make it more professional and representative of our artist - to simple colours like black and white as that is simple yet stylish.
•The layout of tour dates shouldn't be so small and claustrophobic when there is a wide space

From this we have decided that we will change the home page and colour scheme, as well as change the format for different bookmarks.

Gathering Audience Feedback

What's the point of doing a survey?
  • To find out what your audience wants to see and the type of music they like .
  • To help you make production decisions that will attract your target audience.
  • To show you have developed a music video that is relevant to your target audience.
  • To show that you have an understanding of the importance of audience in music production.
Qualitative Research
  • This method of research questioning aims to discover the opinion and preferences of the target group.
  • The questions in this type of research will be open or probing questions.
Quantitative Research
  • This method of research questioning enables the gathering figures or data.
  • You will use this type of questioning when you want to record statistics on audience preferences.
  • Closed questions are used in quantitative research.
We are using both these research methods in order to gain a wider understanding of our target audience and how to attract them.

We have undertaken research into our target audience throughout all stages of the planning and production. This included the following:
1) Pre-production surveys:
  • Before we began we researched into different genres and target audiences.
  • Interviewed our potential target audience regarding our initial ideas.
  • Got feedback from our target audience via our animatic and how we could improve this.
  • Received feedback on our main singer/ artist and whether their rehearsals were effective.
  • Obtained feedback on our first draft.
  • Feedback on our second draft.
  • Feedback on our finished music video.
2) Post-production surveys

Methods of carrying out a survey
  • Focus groups
  • Random surveys which include survey monkey sent out to other schools.

Website so far

When creating the website, I decided to create a first draft in order to allow me to get to get to grips with the website 'Wix', as well as being able to explore different options before making a definite decision. When getting feedback from our target audience, I was told our website wasn't interactive enough and that the marble background was a bit 'tacky'.  Additionally, there was certain parts of my website I didn't like in particular, for example the tour page, this was because it wasn't structured enough in my opinion. However, some of my target audience did enjoy my draft and thought I should keep developing the website. In my opinion, I wasn't keen on the colour scheme and the overall layout of the website, due to the fact it didn't correlate with other artists websites that Eleanor aspires to be like, e.g. Lana Del Rey. Lastly, there is not enough images of her, they are all from the same day. Thus, I felt I should make a new website because it doesn't give the fans enough about the artist.

Based on looking at fan websites and celebrities own websites we have taken characteristics that we think would best suit our artist. We have gone for a standard black and white colour scheme which is a recurring theme through out our research based on other similar artists (Lana Del Rey & Ed Sheeran) The layouts between the 2 design differ. The initial website design presents a less professional and suitable type of design where as the website I am in the making of now, presents a more professional style as if a youngster created it. After gaining feedback from fellow media students we have decided to pursue the ongoing website design of a black and white colour scheme. From this we will ensure our didi pack matches this theme and further changes will be made to develop the website to the top standards, allowing it to seem professional and realistic for our artist.
I have created several tabs on the website and hyper links to social media accounts that Eleanor would have which will keep her involved with her fans so they can follow what she does for example Twitter, Instagram and  Facebook which many artists have on their websites.Additionally, once Eleanor's music video and album cover are finished, I will add them on her website to speculate even more attention for her to become a success. The tour dates are shown on the website along with a whole section dedicated to Eleanor's Merchandise which directly links to a website laid out like a shop which fans can access to follow the latest trends of Eleanor herself.

Test shots for our digipack

We did a photoshoot for our album cover. Our aim for the photoshoot was to get photos that represent Eleanor, as being innocent, yet edgy as this will relate to her being the 'girl next door'. For this purpose, we dressed her in normal day to day clothes as this fits in with our casual theme and correlates with our target audience.Firstly we started doing portrait photos as this is generic in most album covers. We then decided to take 'caught in the moment' pictures in which Eleanor was laughing and looking content - exactly the image we are looking to portray in our music video. We carried out our photoshoot by renting out the cameras from our school and using the music studio to shoot Eleanor against a black screen to ensure the pictures were clear, as well as allowing our viewers to not get distracted by the background.

Research Into Merchandise By Similar Artists

Another stream of revenue for artists is merchandise which fans can buy through the artist's website. Artists make and sell merchandise because in music in the online age, they are receiving less money from single sales and music sales due to the emergence of streaming so need to find other ways of making money. Merchandise is a good way of doing this because it can enable fans to outwardly show their support for the artist and the merchandise may not cost that much to produce. In order to understand what merchandise we should put on our website, I have looked at Lana Del Rey, Banks and Lyyky Li.

LANA DEL REY-
LIKKI LI-

BANKS-

Common things sold alongside music included t-shirts, hats, posters, CD covers and mugs. These items are very simple, with only a picture of the artist or the album cover and maybe the artists name. They also use colours which are not particularly bright. This is important in helping present their star image as the simplicity of these items highlights the simplicity of the alternative/ indie artist and the lack of bright colours and basic design helps to connote their organic nature.
When creating the merchandise for Eleanor, we should consider the type of product we are going to sell, keeping them basic. We should also ensure that the design is simple and that we use simple colours. This will all help to not only connect with our fans and bring in another stream of revenue but also may help to enforce our star image through the presentation of these products.

How we are selling our artist

The future is with the crowd in the cloud

In the 21st century, it is vital for artists to connect directly with their fans, build a following on social media, and it is no longer the sole domain of record companies to market artists and help build their following. Artists now need to connect with fans via social media platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter etc. This helps new artists as it now as much about building your profile as it is building your music. As Mike Masnick states, you need to connect with fans to give them a reason to pay.

We have done this by creating various social media pages such as on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat etc. We also launched her music on different streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music.

Research into tour locations

Our artist Eleanor, is a new upcoming artist, therefore, research is needed to look into similar artists who are also on the same platform as her.

Location for an artist who is up coming
- Smaller size
- Locations need to be geographically align. For example, if artist was performing in Edinburgh it would not be sensible to travel to Brighton the next day as this would be a very long journey.

Locations:
1) O2 Academy Edinburgh - Glasgow
2) Barrowlands - Glasgow
3) The Cluny - Newcastle Upon Tyne
4) Ledmill - Sheffield
5) Rock City - Nottingham
6) Sunflower Lounge Birmingham - Birmingham
7) O2 Academy Birmingham - Birmingham

This is going to be the route that Eleanor is going to take on her Tour in the United Kingdom. This is a good route because they are all geographically aligned and each location is not too far from one another. Therefore, Eleanor will not have to travel too far between each one. To plan even further, we made sure to look at accommodation for Eleanor, so she will ensure a good indication as to where she can stay when she goes there.
The reason behind these locations is because these are a couple of the major cities in England and has good small scale venues that many up

Drafting the website

When considering the design and layout for the website for our band, there were a few things we had to take into consideration. First we had to decide where and how we would make this website, in terms of whether we'd use a program or an online web designer. We narrowed our choice down to the two creation sites weebly.com and wix.com. We chose these two as our media teacher highly recommend them, as well as members within our group having previous experience. It seems most likely that wix will be the design site used as this is the preferred choice of the two members who will be designing the website. Aerin and I feel most comfortable with six and so this is where the website will be made.

In terms of the colour scheme, our initial idea is to use a colour scheme that features the colours of greys, blacks and possibly a white or black colour for the font, we chose these colours to correlate with the main element behind our song, due to the fact that similar artists have the same colour schemes with the same target audience as ours. As well as sounding futuristic. The reason for these colours is that they complement each other well. We have also toyed around with the idea of using black or white font, or using a combination of both. We have taken inspiration for the colour schemes from websites of artists such as; Lana Del Rey.

These websites also contain similar fonts to what we wish to use. We have drafted several ideas for fonts, however some look indie and alternative which doesn't match the genre of our artist. Some of the fonts we have drafted include "Times New Roman", "Crime Times Six", "Alien Encounter", "Avatar Bold", "Bobcat", "Farray", "Avenir", "Manorly", "Anton", "SWTOR Trajan", "Chinyen".
