Using examples of sound and mise-en-scene explain how the charcter of the bride is represented differently in the two scenes.

It is clear in the opening shot from the close-up of her eyes that the character of ‘the bride’ is represented to be terrified, and her facial expressions suggest how she has lost all hope in the fact that she can’t escape. This is also evident from the sound and mise-en-scene. This is because the music is quite depressing, symbolising the end of hope. We can also see how it is very dark in the coffin/box showing the characters claustrophobia. In the first scene, the diegetic sound of the crickets from the bushes symbolises her isolation and how she is cut off from the rest of the world. We can also see how the character is crying and screaming showing how scared she is for the unknown of what will happen. Her heavy breathing in the first scene represents her nerves as well. Another point is that of the synchronous sounds of the hammering box enforces the point that the bride is near to death. The camera is placed extremely close up showing the terror in her eye’s. Also, there is a synchronous diegetic sound of the mud hitting the box, this gradually gets quieter and quieter representing how far underground the coffin is.

In contrast to scene one mise-en-scene is used differently in the second scene, the bride is shown to have hope, as she is now more determined and motivated to escape. Her facial expressions slowly change, and they are evident of her hope as the camera is placed above her head so we can see her confidence and determination to escape, and how optimistic she is about escaping. The sound and editing work together to be more up lifting. We can hear the non-diegetic music getting louder and louder, there is a slow beat which represents her heartbeat as she is now in control of the situation. As well as this, the lighting is more golden connoting the brides hope and positivity, which is much brighter than in the first scene.
